Ahhhh yes...we have reached that phase where "I can do it" seems to flow out of Lily's mouth every 5 minutes. Always determined to achieve what she wants to without any help. I don't know about you, but I seem to forget (or maybe block out) certain phases the kids go through or when they normally occur. Life gets so busy but then the next kid comes along to quickly remind you. I really admire those moms that seem to patiently have it all together and remember every single milestone and when it happened. For me...I need my photos!

Yep...we have a 10 year old boy in the house. We had numerous birthday requests this year like a plea for a go cart, and "How about a trip to Bermuda to swim with dolphins?" Well, we didn't opt for anything like that but we think he was still pretty psyched...

It's been an emotional week. We said Bon Voyage to Anissa who was our au pair for one year as she returned back to France. I think these pics pretty much speak for themselves. Man are we going to miss her!

Well it's here again. The time to transition into summer after a long school year. Hold on did I just say "summer?" I must have blinked and missed the last 8 months. The end of the school year was just so crazy busy, full of all good stuff yes but no time for blogging. Can't wait to catch up on everyone's life stories.
So, in between planning summer camps and classes for three kids, buying teacher gifts and chaperoning field trips, here is what else has been going on for the last 3 weeks...(warning lots of pics!)

Luca turned 6...

Finished the lacrosse season...

and graduated kindergarten...sniff sniff...

We had a visit with Nonna and Bis Nonna who turned a lovely 91 years young...

A trip to Monticello and University of Virginia with Lance's class...

What a bummer to loose the semi finals...

but still so proud of how far he's come.

Whew, you san see why I've been total slacker blogger! Hope everyone who is also wrapping up the year on fast forward is taking it all in.

Calm Before the Storm

Ahhhhh it was so nice...

Mother's Day brunch with Mom and Dad and this miracle of a family I have been given. Little did we know what was brewing.

The day before, Rick and I had attended Gold Cup here in VA...racing horses, big hats and lots of delicious cocktails. There is also a great deal of food. Something on the table was just waiting to make us, along with all of the friends we were there with incredibly SICK. It was two days in bed for both of us but we are probably a few pounds lighter because of it! Not fun. At least Mother's Day was a joy and how happy am I to have pics where all three kids are actually in the shot! It's a miracle. I know it's late but I hope everyone had a wonderful Mother's Day.

I came across this blog written by a Korean adoptee searching for her birth family. Turns out she actually now lives 15 minutes away from me where the Korean American population is quite large.
I know I have said this before but I hope someday Lily will feel the desire to do her own natural mother search. Yes, it is entirely up to her but in a selfish way I would give anything to have the opportunity to just say thank-you. Now who knows, perhaps it may end with a not so successful outcome but only time will tell.

Spring, (or should I say what is supposed to be spring) has thrown us into a new phase in this parenting life of ours. I am calling it the Taxi Phase. It's a life where I often ask myself "How did I get here?" Like when I open the back of my truck and out pours all forms of sporting gear accompanied by Goldfish, water bottles and matchbox cars. Or when Lily throws her version of a tantrum and shouts to me "I'M NOT YOUR MOMMY ANYMORE MOMMY!!"
How about the feeling like you're constantly expected to be a walking, driving Wikipedia? Check out the recent questions being thrown at me from my 5 year old...

1. How do people die Mom? Do you just drop to the floor and boom your done?

2. Can't God bring you back to life? He is GOD ya know!

3. Mom, if you show someone your butt, you are mooning them so if you show them your pe**s are you sunning them?

As for the 9 yr old, we have conquered "The Talk." Yes, it's officially done. We think it went very well...no pressure for a parent right, just a conversation that your kid will remember his or her entire life! AHHH. He seemed to be very empowered with his new found information, kind of like being let in on a little secret. After all the questions on anatomy, puberty and disease... the funniest one had to be "So Mom, if you don't want any more children in that way, are you and Dad gonna do that AGAIN?"

In a few days, it will the 2 year anniversary of the day we got Lily. I came across this link for an organization called The Ties Program
Check out the video. CHSFS organizes trips like this also and I look forward to the day where we take our own birthland trip back to Korea. I know it's a few years away but the way time is flying it will be here in the blink of an eye. I can't help but wonder if someday Lily will want to open her file and locate her birth family. In my own selfish way I hope she does, but I realize it's entirely her choice. We wholeheartedly support whatever decision she will make. Can you imagine having the opportunity to say "thank-you" to your child's birth mom? How powerful. Only time will tell.

It's been a big week for Lily...

Just one month ago, her feet wouldn't even touch the pedals and now she is riding. Ok, I know...probably not a good idea to let outside toys in the house.

We discovered "Pinkalicious" after story time at the bookstore. Brings a smile to my face to be able to say I have a daughter obsessed with Pinkalicious. Never thought I would be able to say anything like that in my lifetime.

What did we do to celebrate Lunar New Year? Nothing! It was just one of those crazy weeks where time just got away from us. Now, we are always up for taking the kids out and we have pushed the limit many a time but this time, it just didn't happen. I am sure many of you can relate to the project a simple meal can become with 3 kids at a restaurant. I do feel a bit guilty since it is so important to incorporate Lily's culture into our lives and we do have like a billion Korean restaurants and bakeries nearby. I guess there is always next year. What a wonderful world! I see snow falling slowly and coating the trees. I see 3 snow angles on my front lawn. I see my 9 yr old help his sister to make a snowball. I see my kids eating dinner by candlelight because the power went out for a whole night.

Last week we were on vacation in Aruba. I saw white sand and crystal blue water. I saw my 2 yr old daughter swim without floaties and throw herself under water. I saw my 5 year old snorkel for the first time and squeal as striped fish floated by him. I saw the memories being made as the kids shared meals, took walks and ate ice cream with their grandparents.

And I think to myself...what a wonderful world.

This year our holiday plans were a bit altered and with good reason. Usually it's our crazy routine of Xmas eve in NJ with Rick's family then we head back home so that the kids can wake up in their own house on Christmas Day(Yes, we usually jump in the car around 11 and get back to spread out the gifts around 3 am).
2010, however, had to be different. You see, after all the adoption ups and downs, my cousins Laurie and Mike finally have a son. Anthony arrived home from Taiwan in late November and Dec 26th was his baptism day. So we packed up the car once again after a party in North Jersey and spending Christmas in south Jersey, off to Long Island we went in the middle of a blizzard. The kids were so cool with the plan. After all, they were meeting their new cousin and waiting for them at home was a mountain of presents! Here are a few pics...

Can you make out the name on the heart? It says Julia. This is the name we chose for our daughter who was born on Nov 29,1999 and passed that very same night. This is the day in which we begin our Christmas decorating every year in honor of our little angel who was born too soon and changed our lives forever. Yes, it has been 11 years but as many of you out there unfortunately know, a loss such as this doesn't ever just go away, no matter how many subsequent children you may have or how many years pass by. It's always a missing piece of your family...always a hole in your heart.
So once again we dedicate our tree to our little messenger. Without you, our family would never be what it is today. Fly high little one and thank you for choosing me to be your mom. With this our season begins...

CRAP is what I woke up to find all over the kitchen table today...yes that's mini frozen pizza Lily decided to eat for a before breakfast snack.

CRAP is what we found on the floor when we thought it was ok to keep Lily out of a diaper on Saturday...toilet training is up and down these days. Happy to say it was on the hardwood.

CRAP is a word my 9 yr old just loves to use these days..."Ah crap I forgot my book," or "Ah crap, I don't want to go to bed." I am not loving it.

CRAP is what I find all over if I even turn my head for a second...Lily has learned that the safety cabinet locks come off if they aren't tight enough...Great!

CRAP it's a good thing they are cute!!

Home For Christmas

This is the precious face of Baby Anthony. Soon to be home with his parents, my cousins who have been waiting for years to fulfill their dream of becoming parents. After countless roadblocks, health issues and adoption nightmares, the dream is about to become reality. The travel call came today for them, that call that you wait for every single minute when you are nearing the end of the adoption process. It's the call or maybe email that you never forget..the day, the time, the way your heart just pounds out of your chest and you are overcome with relief, excitement and fear all at the same time.
It has been difficult since Laurie and Mike have already met their son on the first trip to Taiwan and have been waiting on final court procedures with fear that something would go wrong. Now they will travel in a few weeks and be reunited with this little bundle of joy for Thanksgiving. The fact that this little boy will be home for Christmas is just icing on the cake...how cool!!! We couldn't be happier!

That Not So Fall Feeling

Fall is my favorite. The reds and yellows, the crisp air, the pumpkin pancakes. The settling in to the back to school routine and let's not forget the apple picking. Last week I took all 3 kids to the apple orchard hoping to get just full of that fall feeling. It was great until the temperature rose to an annoying 89 degrees, Lily was constantly tripping over apples that had fallen already and Luca and Lance basically fighting over the apple picker which can seriously take someones head off. Oh yea and there were bees everywhere. We did manage to come away with a pretty large bag of apples, a big pumpkin and some fresh apple cider. Hope everyone is having a great fall so far!

More Hoops to Jump Through

This is just a big rant about the endless paper jungle you have to weave your way through with adoption. I have to say that for the most part, our paper dance went really smoothly. That is until now. I was under the impression that when you legally finalize your adoption with the courts, and you proceed with a name change, everything is taken care of. Not so.
I took all of Lily's documents, every single paper, down to the Social Security office to apply for a card. I presented everything to a not so pleasant woman and she informed me I would be hearing from them in a few weeks. Well, it turns out we were denied a number due to a problem with USCIS. When I contacted them, they said there was no problem and to go back to the SS office. Time went by and one day I received a letter stating that Lily's Permanent Residence Card was still in her Korean name and that was the reason for the hold up. At least someone was actually working on the case. Then I immediately download the papers for a name change, got the supporting documents and a check of course and sent them out. This took pretty much an entire day. We were sent a date to get Lily's new fingerprints which we did this morning. Now we wait. We wait for the new card, which then has to go to Social Security to then wait again for a number.
Why the push for the SS number? Well we travel in late January and we need a US passport for Lily. Just to exaust you further, I called the passport agency to see if they would accept things other than a SS number. Oh sure they would, however, if it's anything in Korean, it would have to be translated by an authority figure. They won't accept a Certificate of Foreign Birth (which we have) because it is issued after the child is 1 yr old. I was informed though that we could "try" to apply with what we have and it "might" work. I guess it depends on who opens the mail that day and if they have had their coffee. AGHHHH!

It was 2 years ago today that we got the news. Our number had finally come up! It was around 8:00 pm when Rick came running upstairs asking me if I had checked my email. I knew it was important since it got my husband off his bike that he religiously trained on every night. The message from our social worker read something like "I have exciting news and call as soon as possible." Holy crap this was it! With my heart beating out of my chest, I called and sure enough it was news of our referral. Rick waited as the photos and medical history came through.

This was the first glimpse of our daughter. Cheers to all of you who are awaiting referrals of your own. Hope they come quickly!

I cried with that ugly face you get, so much that my 5 yr old who was starting a full day of school with a new uniform, new schedule, new teacher, gave me this look as if to say "Mom, what's wrong with you?" Now don't get me wrong, I was more than ready to see them off to begin the new school year but it's just something about that transition from the summer to a new chapter in their lives. Gets me every time.

Big Sky

I was fortunate this past week to be able to tag along with Rick to Colorado. He was attending a movement analysis seminar at The Olympic Training Facility in Colorado Springs so we made sort of a mini vacation out of it. So much beauty to photograph, I was in heaven! The sky, the air, the mountains, all I can say is WOW! That little rental car took me all over. It was great to get the behind the scenes tour of the training center and while Rick was behaving in class, I was feeding the soul with some exploring. I went to Seven Falls, had crepes at a little town called Manitou Springs (where I also did some kid free whine free shopping) and visited the US Air Force Academy.

Taking the advice of a nice woman I met while getting a pedicure, Rick and I had lunch at the base of Pike's Peak at a little place called Wines of Colorado. We were able to enjoy great wine and lunch at the edge of a creek with a backdrop of the mountains. Makes me tingle just thinking about it.

Have you ever seen the Broadmore Resort? It is absolutely gorgeous. You may have to leave your left arm to pay for your stay, but once again it's gorgeous. We were here for dinner and drinks.

Garden of The Gods...no words necessary.

No trip to Colorado would be complete without rafting. We drove an hour west to raft on the Arkansas river and take a train ride through Royal Gorge. Yes it was beginner level and of course we had "chatty Cathy" in our raft. You know, the one that's always in every bunch, every class, every tour. We were soaked in the first few seconds but with such glorious scenery, I still had a permanent smile glued to my face the whole time.

Taking the Show on the Road

Wow feels like ages since I have checked on all of my favorite bloggy friends. It's been a wonderfully busy summer this year. Hard to believe school begins for the boys in 2 weeks. Mom's happy, boys... not so much. Our visit with Nonna and Biz Nonna in NJ actually turned into a visit with Luca's Godmother and like 25 of Rick's closest cousins!! He has a very large family and it was so nice to spend time with such great people who we really don't see enough.

The kids went crabbing and on jet ski rides. Rick's Grandmother showed us blankets she is knitting for our children's children (how cool is that?) and Luca of course got his favorite, Nonna's nutella cookies

After packing on the pounds from all the delicious Italian food, we surprised the kids with a trip to Hershey Park just in case our pants weren't quite snug enough.

A Keane Evening

It's been a busy schedule here, visit to NJ to see Rick's mom and Nonna then a surprise trip for the boys to Hershey. Lots of pics whch I will post later but for now I am still singing the songs played by Keane last night at their amazing show. We went with friends to see them play at Merriweather Post Pavillion which is a great venue. They actually sold good wine and crab cakes to feast on while watching the opening act. Check out how close we were to the band. The images (taken with my I phone) aren't such great quality but ahhhh got to do this more often!

All of Life's Grace in One Little Face

I was thrilled to find a comment on this blog posted by Lily's foster mom!! Of course it's in Korean and I am not sure I have the accurate translation yet. Oh how I wish I could explain to Lily how much she was loved from the very start. How much her foster family gave to her with their love, their compassion, their open hearts.

I often look at this precious face and wonder how she came to be. Are her eyes from her birth mom or perhaps from her grandmother? Is her smile her birth father's? Is her strong will something she got from her great grandfather and what on earth is going to run through her brain when she is old enough to ask these very same questions?

What I do know for sure, is that this little face holds such mystery. It holds a link to her history and it will always remind us of where she is from. It also explodes with expression, curiosity and joy. In the times life is hectic and crazy, when the days are full with shuffling kids around and managing a family of 5, I am grateful for this face to show me what beauty and grace life has thrown my way. It's pretty darn cool.

I am calling on everyone out there, anyone who may come across this post. Weather you are a waiting family or you are a seasoned parent, we need prayers, good vibes, and positive energy sent our way. You see, some dear family members are awaiting news about the health of a possible referral, a baby girl in Taiwan. This couple has been through the ringer. Fertility issues, health issues and more than one adoption horror story including a birth mom that changed her mind! We are hoping that soon, they can kiss their waiting period good bye and begin life as a threesome so please, I would be so grateful for some good wishes.

Ahhhh, I have a serious case of the "back from vacation blues"! It just went way too fast. The weather was perfect and having Anissa to help with the kids was really nice. The only down side is that the 7 lbs I lost for the trip are probably right back on. The last 4 days consisted of non stop eating and drinking and I am now actually frightened of the scale. Our friends joined us for a few days and my brother and his girlfriend from NY have come with us every year so far. The kids had a blast...beach, pool, go carts, bumper boats, laser tag, smores, fireworks.

We are so excited to introduce her to this country. Let's not forget to mention that I am planning on being one happier, less stressed and less crazed mom of three. I plan to pee alone, actually work out and shower, food shop without loosing years off my life and ocassionally meet my husband for a nice lunch. That's right, I am taking part of my life back! At first I resisted this whole thing. Who me, need help? and someone living with us in our home? NO way! Then it clicked. If I was at the office, I would have a receptionist, a billing person and maybe an assistant so why not have another set of hands with my job as a parent? The next few weeks will be interesting I am sure, but for now we are all headed to The Outer Banks for vacation. Anissa gets a taste of the beach and it's only her second week here.

Commitment

This is the first year we have ever done swim team. Wow what a commitment! Practice every day , meets twice a week, voluteer jobs for Rick and I all while juggling the other two kids. Yes, alot of work but I am loving it. It's great exercise for Lance along with a taste of competition and the feeling of being part of a team. At first, the swimsuit was not exactly his favorite I guess because he was used to the whole board shorts thing. In fact, he cryed the first practice where he had to wear it! Today we had to be there at 7 am. After the cub scout picnic last night the kids went to bed pretty late so dragging Lance out of bed was not fun. I learned a great deal by helping run the time cards back and forth and Lance was hoping to beat his last time trial. I on the other hand am just happy to see him participating and enjoying the experience.

Nonna turns 90

This weekend we traveled to NJ to celebrate Rick's grandmother's 90th birthday. Even after the 4 hr drive, I was pleasently surprised at how well the kids cooperated. They has a blast with all of their cousins who they just don't get to see often enough. Check out how great Nonna looks at 90...

Well, this morning it happened. We knew it wouldn't be long. Yup, our little gymnast has masterred the crib jump! Kind of a bummer (I confess to sometimes leaving her there in the morning so I could suck down a latte in peace.) I guess shopping for new furniture will be fun but training her to actually stay in a bed??? AHHHHH.

It took me a while to realize that this whole mommy thing really throws you. Just when you think you have it down with a routine of some sort or a pattern of some kind, life mixes it up. Kids are always changing schedules, entering new phases and it's up to us to be right there with them rolling and changing with it all. I always get a bit sad when this happens like last week with the end of Pre K. I'm not saying that I want to hang on to every second, in fact I am enjoying my kids more as they get older. No craving the infant phase for me that's for sure. It's just this little feeling that creeps up and reminds me that the life we have known for a short while is over.
This weekend was another reminder as I did the "clothes swap." This is when I put away the clothes that the kids have grown out of, hang some new ones or take out the ones that have been saved. These kids seriously have enough clothing to outfit a small city.

The bins are filled according to size and sometimes I make Lance draw something to throw in the box too, just for a laugh when I have to pull them out for Luca...

Lance has graduated from kids hangers to the adult size...

There is also a box with a few things that I just don't ever want to part with, the really tiny clothes, what they came home in and some of the boys matching outfits. Little shoes and stuff like that too.
As soon as I find the time, Lily's closet is next.

It started with Luca's 5th Birthday on Sunday. Rick's mom and grandmother were visiting as well. The rain was on and off but it didn't stop the party from happening.

Then there were the end of Pre-K events. I volunteereed to make scrapbooks for the teacher gifts. I must have been insane since there are 3 teachers and 21 children. I ended up creating 63 pages! It's just that these teachers are so outstanding and so deserving of a special gift. On Thurs we had the end of year party and today was the family picnic. I have to admit a few tears were shed as we said good-bye to pre K. I will miss the drop off hugs and kisses and the looking back to me for a thumbs up as I walked away. The moms in this class are so cool and we actually really enjoy each others company so I will miss the chats at pick up. This year I found it amazing to hear such praise for my little Luca, how he listened and was such a joy all the time. This being because lately with me he is the devil! I was consistently impressed with what he was learning and so happy to have had these women in his life.

Tea Time

Yesterday was Mother's Day Tea with Luca's pre K class. All the moms received a paper corsage made by the students and our photo was taken with our child. Mrs. Mazella interviewed each child about their mother with questions such as..."What is your mom's favorite color?" and "How old is she?" I appreciated Luca stating my age as 8. The kids sang us a song and read aloud a book about love.
We were presented with a drawing of ourselves and we were served, tea, fruit and brownies. At each place setting, a plant was waiting for us to take home and pink carnations were given out as we left. Can you say adorable?? Of course the sap that I am had to hold back tears a few times, realizing that pre school days for my middle son are coming to a close. Once again I ask the question... "can't we slow it down just a little bit?"

Saturday was our first Gold Cup. Lots of big hats, big drinks and we won two out the 5 races. We joined 3 other couples and set up a table with cheese, salads, shrimp and lots of great food. The sun was shining, the horses were beautiful and did I mention we were kid free for almost 24 hours??

Ahhh yes, once again we have a 2 year old in our house. Lily has mastered the "NO" and the crying when she doesn't get her way. The pout when she is insulted and the throwing when she is frustrated. On the other hand, she bounces when she runs, gives the tightest of hugs and will model her dresses for you. She has the face of an angel, the power to light up a room and the ability to put a smile on anyone's face.

I am sure I am not alone in my feelings on our adopted child's birthday. Yes, it's a happy day, the one that brought our little girl into the world, but also such a sad day. The day that her birth mother said both hello and goodbye to her baby. Was she alone or was she with friends or family? Was she frightened or was she happy to get it over with? Did she have heartburn or back pain during the pregnancy? How long was the labor? Did she know she was having a girl? Did she hold her baby? I can't help but wonder.

We thank this courageous woman, somewhere in Yeosu, Korea. I hope she has peace today and someday I wish to be able to let her know of the happiness she has brought to us and how she has changed our lives forever.

Our agency put together a Korean dinner event this weekend. We were able to meet families who are recently home, families who are waiting for their travel call and kids who have been home for 14 years! It was so great to connect and the kids really hit it off. Lily ate like a champ, shoveling in the japchae which kept her satisfied and occupied. Nancy, an adoptive mom who is actually from Korea was able to answer questions about food and other customs. Of course there was a great deal of adoption story swapping. A good time was had by all!

Last Night's Birthday Debacle

On numerous occasions, my husband was very clear about NOT wanting a party to celebrate his 40th. In fact, he said that if I threw him a party, he wouldn't even show up or if it was a surprise, he would leave!!! Instead, he wanted to take a trip together, which is cool with me. I'll go anywhere especially if it means time alone no kids. He did, however, agree to a small get together with drinks and a few close friends, that is whenever we could actually fit it into out schedules. See these days every weekend seems to be packed and Rick is even fitting in some long distance cycling.
So the big day arrives starting with Luca and his heartbreaking allergy eyes.

After this, it's the usual make breakfast, clean the kitchen, sweep, make all the beds throw a load of laundry in, give the kids a bath, get ready for pre school. But this time it was all while planning to surprise Rick at his office with a small party with the kids after school. Just a little something he he. So as most moms know, it's a project to get anywhere with kids in tow and then to manage to get yourself presentable without the frumpy mommy costume is a pretty miraculous accomplishment. I'm getting the car packed, talking to my mom at the same time, you know the drill... sippy, shoes, coats, backpack etc... and all of a sudden it hits me. This strange "episode" where I am overcome by stress and my thoughts aren't making it to my mouth. I sit down for a few deep breaths, calmed myself down and waited for it to go away. Needless to say, It really freaked me out. I immediately start diagnosing myself and making my anxiety worse. I drive Luca to school, truck Lily to the store for cupcakes and party goods and set out on my way. The plan at this point was to give Lily a nap, work out and shower in the 1 1/2 hour time span before picking up the boys. Yea, that was before the sneaky cop pulled me over for speeding and began the downward spiral of my day.

With enough time to shower only, I jump back in the car, line up mom to baby sit, make dinner reservations, pick up the boys, and we all head to get the balloons. They were so excited!! Me, not so much since having 3 kids at the store is a total nightmare these days. I believe it has taken years off of my life. So now we have everything. Exausted yet?? I then text Rick to make sure he would still be working for a while. We're good to go. That is until I can't find the office! This is a new location that Rick is at 2 days a week and I have never been there. Yes I have navigation but for some reason it directed me to drive away from the building. I tried twice, then 3 times and then the traffic started to build, and the U turns and then the kids fighting in the back. They are hungry and tired and dying for the cupcakes! AHHHH. Finally, we find the office, get Lily in the stroller, the boys are bursting with their party hats on, cupcakes, huge balloons, cards, the whole bit ready for the big moment only to find that their dad had already LEFT!!! How bad does that suck??

Back into the car to brave the traffic home, sad and disapponted. All I can think of was my husband of 12 years arriving home to an empty house on the evening of his 40th birthday. No decorations, no cake, no family. Frustrated and starving, we walk in the house I'm ready to cry and Rick is wondering why I chose to push the limit and was too tired to go out to dinner. We proceed to bicker, eat a quick dinner home and get to the candles and cupcakes. To top it all off, I only got this one crappy photo:

So basically I am so sorry that it didn't turn out as we had hoped, but I promise to plan that fabulous trip for him along with a small get together as soon as his training is over.

I think collecting shells should be a mandatory start to each day!! How beautiful are these?

After mom and dad left, Rick's high school friend and his family joined us for 2 days. It was great catching up and the kids got along great. We packed it in with great food, mini golf, go carts and my all time favorite Kill Devil Custard.

Last night's dinner was at Outer Banks Brewing Co where we tasted some great beer and what do the boys order?

Filet minon for Lance followed by creme brulee!! FYI, he's 8.

Although, we couldn't get Luca to stray from the chicken fingers, he had creme brulee just like his big brother. Poor little guy has been on benedril for his allergies and was prety much like a zombie.

As for little miss Lily, she decided to stuff her mouth with pasta, so much that she forced herself to puke it up at the table! Ahhhh never a dull moment.

Up until today, it's been sunshine, blue skies and a ridiculous amount of ice cream and fries. Today, however the rain came. Rick made pancakes and it was off to the outlet mall for some shopping, a movie for the boys and maintenence on the house to get it ready for the high season renters. The only drawback to having a house at the beach. That, and not being able to come down here more than 3 times a year.
Oh, one more thing. Lily actually kept a bow in her hair for more than 3 seconds!

The start of our spring break here in the Outer Banks has been just glorious! (love that word glorious). It was Easter brunch on Sunday with Grandma and Grandpa at our favorite restaurant down here and some relaxing beach time yesterday. I wish I could begin every day with some shell collecting. Even though the ocean was ice cold, the kids still got soaked and as always my camera was part of the experience.

Today we received Lily's Certificate of Foreign Birth and now we can finally proceed to getting the SS number and US passport. Just when you think there are no more hoops to jump through, but really I can't complain. It's all worth it.

As I sit on my butt, listening to my boys call each other ugly and obsess over Playstaion, I look over at Lily with a full diaper. It's 10:00, I am not on the treadmill, I am not cleaning or cooking, I am not even dressed. What am I doing?? BLOGGING! I sort of dropped out over the last few months but I admit to now being completely addicted. I love reading everyone's stories, adoption memories and of course the photos of Korea and these beautiful children. It takes me right back there. My heart aches for those parents who are waiting and I feel that groggy happiness for those who have just returned. I am thankful to everyone for sharing and I hope to give inspration to others as well! I am in the process of giving this blog a fresh look and hope it turns out nicely.

OK, so I am a week late on this post but my laptop is suffering from injuries sustained by a 1 year old. For Lily's Gotcha Day we began with Korean bbq with Grandma and Grandpa. This was their first experience with Korean food. After that we headed to Le Matin de Paris. Yes the name is French but the desserts are primarily Korean?? Wonderful breads, cakes and doughnuts too. We came across a place just like this in Seoul last year. We are pretty fortunate to have a whole bunch of Korean restaurants, bakeries and businesses all around 20 minutes away. They actually call it Koreatown!
We tried the bingsoo. First of all...it's huge. There is crushed ice topped with fruit, followed by frozen yogurt and covered with frosted flakes! That's right, frosted flakes. Interesting right?? We also went to town on the red bean doughnuts which are delicious. It was late and the kids were melting down and probably disturbing the others trying to enjoy their tea, but it just had to be done. It was our family's first gotcha day. Oh yea, of course the gotcha day balloons I ordered arrived the next day.

So I know lots of people call it the "Gotcha Day" but I still haven't decided if I really love that. It seems like a term used when you catch or grab something away, kind of sounds like you are purchasing an item to me also. Maybe I am overanalyzing but whatever you call it, it is a day that has changed our lives forever so it must be celebrated!

I am posting 2 videos. The first is the actual good-bye at Eastern. We have lots of footage leading up to this when we were spending time with Lily's foster parents, getting last minute feeding instructions and being given supplies for the trip home. They gave us the toy we had sent her in a care package, food, diapers, bottles, clothes, even a towel so she would recognize the scent from what would soon be her old home. They had her armed for travel with her own backpack too...so cute. I was so proud to see the foster mom wearing the bracelet we gave to her at the first meeting. It was difficult to absorb anything being said since my heart was just racing the entire time. Not nervous to get our baby, but because I kept imagining the feelings of her foster parents and hoping the pain of the good-bye wouldn't be too bad. From watching other family videos from Eastern, I knew what was coming and how it was going to happen. I can feel the anxiety even now.

As soon as our driver was ready, one of the directors enterred the room. She instructed us to pack up, placed a hand on Hye Won and delivered the famous prayer that has been used for years as babies go off to begin their new lives. I can see the foster mom's face change from cheerful to distraught as she held my new daughter tightly and calmed her fidgeting. When the prayer was done, we presented them with more gifts, this time wine and flowers with a letter to them we had translated into Korean. They had been so wonderful with our baby for 10 months of her life. We headed down the stairs to the back entrance and we were told to say our goodbyes. It was pretty awkward as we lingered there, not wanting to leave. I caught a glimpse of a young pregnant woman watching us from the top of the stairs, most likely envisioning her own babies journey. Even though the process is orchestrated in order to avoid a long drawn out ordeal, it was still so hard. I managed to snap the last photo of Hye Won with her foster mom (probably uncomfortable for her, but I actually love the shot). They even had to tell us where to sit in the car!! It was very quick after that. As soon as I sat down, the foster dad handed me the baby, they started waving, saying "good- bye" and just as we were about to pull away, the foster mom stuck her head in the car for one last kiss. Through my tears all I could say was "Thank-you." After watching this video, I wish I had given the foster mom a great big hug, (even though I had read that it wasn't customary to do that) but it all happened so fast. There was so much to take in and really I think she was just so focussed on Hye Won and not on us at that moment. We hope to see her again one day, and when the time does come, I will be sure to embrace her!

The second video is much more calm. We were preparred for Hye Won to freak out in the car but she ended up falling asleep in my arms and then napping at the hotel. I forgot to mention that usually the babies are given as families are on their way to the airport but they decided to give Hye Won to us the day before our flight. We didn't expect for it to go down that way and no we did not ask for her to be given to us earler. Our agency had advised us not to do that since it was considerred disrespectful. It just worked out that way with our early flight time and the fact that she was doing so well with us at the first meeting. Anyway, you'll see how it went from anxiety and emotion to happiness and calm. At least for a little while. What you won't see, however, is the way she kept us up half the night crying, clearly confused and sad not knowing who the heck we were. We thought for sure the flight home would be a nightmare. Thank heaven when she woke the next morning, she was actually fine, a joy the entire way home taking 3 naps and has been smiling ever since. What an unbelievable, unforgettable, don't know what I did to deserve it life experience! Happy Gotcha Day!

It was one year ago today we were in Seoul meeting our little girl for the first time. I can still feel my nervous stomache. All of the waiting, preparing, the extra 2 month delay. The laying in bed at night wondering what she was doing, what she would look like. Was she happy? Was she loved? Would she hate us? What size was she wearing? Sobbing at YouTube videos. What would the boys be like with a Korean sister? Then of course, the trip around the globe...all for this moment.

That day was more than we ever dreamed it would be. Smiles were glued to our faces. I thought for sure I would just break down in tears but that didn't come until a few days later. The meeting with Lily, seeing the other babies getting ready to go to to their foster homes, the lunch with the agency president and then finding out we were going to get Lily for keeps a day earlier then we expected!! For all of these memories, we are so grateful.

Thank heaven we are back to school and have some kind of routine again. Eight straight snow days plus weekends, not to mention Rick and another seminar!! It was really enough to push me over the edge. By day 3 the boys were over it and had no interest in going out in the cold so it was back and forth between the toys, video games and the TV. We did manage to get Lance to read 3 books though. We were all battling colds as well so the cabin fever was pretty severe. Being from NY, I am really not used to the fact that as soon as a few flurries fall, the city shuts down. The snow did, however, make for some beautiful photos but we are ready for spring! Here is a Lily update:

* She says "I Do" and wants to do everything herself.

* She gives tight hugs and makes this cute squeeze sound.

* She is into every drawer, every cabinet, and even opens the pantry door.

* She spells her name to us and pretends to write it.

* In her crib, she has to sleep with her duck, her horse, her doll and her mini mouse. Then has to be covered with the same 2 blankets. All were gifts from family and friends.

* She says "ahh baby" every time she sees a photograph.

*She hates to drink from a sippy cup and does everything the boys do!

* The drama has begun. She had mastered the pout and cries when you say "no" to her.

About 2 weeks ago we recieved the papers from the attorney stating that Lily's adoption was final and that her name had been changed. After we receive the certificate of foreign birth, we can then proceed with the ss number and passport. It is seriously hard to believe that we have been home from Korea for almost one year and that the paper work is coming to an end.

After opening the envelope, I was met with mixed feelings. I was happy to be finished with the whole legal thing but I couldn't help but feel sad as well. Sad for Lily's birth mom and the end of the name that she chose for her. Sure it's still a part of her but still it was sort of a goodbye. I had visions of the future where Lily asks about her Korean name and why we didn't keep it or incorporate it into her new name. I was hoping she wasn't destined to be one of those adoptees who have resentment towards us for robbing her culture from her. I remembered our referral papers with the meaning of Hye Won. Grace and pretty is what it read. I was then told soon after that it was more like "God's grace and pretty flower." What name could be more perfect then Lily? Here is the first photo I ever took myself of precious Hye Won as she was called for the first 10 months of her life.

Aruba

We are back from our yearly trip to Aruba. Gorgeous weather for the entire week and now back to the grey of January in DC. This year's trip was even more challenging traveling with 3 kids. Definitely not relaxing but 80 and sunny with that turquoise water really makes for a nice change of scenery. The kids had a blast seeing their cousins and spending hours bouncing back and forth from the pool to the beach. Lily in her usual fashion stole the show. Even the night she decided to power puke just as we ordered dinner, the people at the next table were telling us how adorable she is! Last year we weren't able to go since our travel call was supposed to come right around Aruba time and Lance still talks about how Lily made him miss the trip! Luca is becoming more and more independent these days and Lance just wanted to be one of the "big cousins." We figure in about 3 more years, Rick and I can actually enjoy the trip lounging with a cocktail without being on constant kid duty. At least there is help from mom, dad and nonna!!

It is so great to see the girly toys just scattered around the house now that Xmas is over. I actually tripped over Lily's American Girl baby doll last night. We received a letter from the agency saying that our update letter was translated into Korean and everything has been sent over to Lily's foster family. Meanwhile, we are nearing the end of the finalization process. Today I am off to the airport to make sure we can travel out of the country with Lily's Korean passport since we leave this weekend. Agency says it's no problem, but the thought of arriving at the airport at 6am with the 5 of us packed and not being allowed to travel really wouldn't be fun.

This past week, Lily began to say my name and screams it out every morning when she is ready to get out of her crib. She also is calling "Luca" and says "goodnight." Ahhh finally a few words that are clear! Here are a few recent pics.

I am so excited and proud to post this pic of Lily in her Christmas dress. She actually followed direction and posed for me!

Our family photo for our card this year is a nice surpise even though I thought the kids were awful during the session...Lily, who smiles all the time, refused to even crack one that night but it still managed to turn out ok. Completely my fault for making them do it at 5:00 at the end of a long day. I just finished an update letter to Lily's foster family. Really can't believe it was 9 months ago that we met. Hopefully it reaches them soon.

Ten Years

Nov 29th marked the 10 year anniversary of the birth and death of our first baby. An experienced that has changed us forever. Unbelivable to me how time has accelerated. The years have filled up our lives in ways we never could have predicted. We use this day to dress our whole house for Christmas in her honor. We also visit the cemetary. She really is the messenger, an angel who briefly touched us so that we could have the family we now have.

This year is different, however, with the addition of Lily. Her first Christmas home is exciting for all of us. This time last year we were so anxious for that travel call and wondering how she was growing and spending her days in Korea. Here is a pic of her with the ornament we hung last year. It contains her Eastern referral photo. Talk about a rollar coaster of emotions, but overall the day was ok.

I really have to become a better blogger. These posts seem to have more and more time in between them. At this point in our life as a family of 5, I must get Lily to the pediatrician for her 18 month exam, not to mention that I noticed a bit of swelling at her left ear piercing. She took a fall in my bathroom and cut her lip open and scratched her face with her fingernail on the same day. Both of which are just in time for our family photo session scheduled for Thursday!! I am sooo excited to have these done. The photographer who got such great shots of our homecoming at the airport will be shooting them (with some cooperation from mother nature so we can do them outdoors.)

Lance has us under the spell of Yughio and given his obsessive personality, it's pretty much all he talks about, thinks about and cares about. That card collection is like gold to him. Tomorrow should be a blast as we head to his class trip to Maryland Science Center. Screaming 8 year olds on a school bus for 1 hour there and back...what was I thinking??

Luca is my pre school champ! I was worried about him pulling this screaming bit he does at home as well as the typical defiant 4 year old attitude. His teacher raved about him and had not one negative comment about him! Being that I often feel I was absent when they handed out the parenting manual, this was nice to hear. Maybe I am actually doing something right.

Little Lily bear is still climbing on everything and starting to want to do things on her own like put on socks and feed herself with a spoon. She has started to say her name which really is the cutest thing ever! She has this new pout face, something I am not used to with boys and cries huge tears when it appears that we have offended her in some way.

Here are some pics from the last 2 weeks. We had a great time at the National Italian American Foundation gala which is headed by my brother in law. We actually got to meet some celbs like Jimmy Kimmel, THE Italian cooking show legend Lidia, and actress Carla Gugino...so gorgeous and friendly too.

Just a few shots from Halloween. The rain was on and off, but nothing could deter the little ones from getting their candy. Trick or Treating doesn't really happen on our block since the distance between the homes isn't friendly to little legs so they just went to our immediate neighbors and off to our party we went. Lance was cool with his hair sprayed black and dressed as a Bakugan brawler, Lily was Snow WHite and Luca had the cutest pirate costume ever (Old Navy..$20!!!) We spent the night at friends and went to a nice brunch on Sunday. The boys are already counting the days until Halloween 2010.

Lots going on over the last 2 weeks! We had our cousins visiting us from Florida and taking advantage of the sites in DC. The kids really warmed up to them quickly which was so nice to see. Then it was off to NY for a sweet sixteen party for a dear friend. We got to squeeze in a visit with more family that weekend and stuffed ourselves with pizza and bagels...the only foods we really miss from up there.

We are praying for cousins who have been on their own adoption journey for way too long now and we hope they are placed with the baby that is meant for them very soon.

Finalization has Begun

So the 6 month mark has passed and we have consulted an attorney to begin the finalization process. Seems pretty straight forward, papers from the agency, a meeting to discuss our background and how the adoption thing all came to be. We don't have to actually appear in court and the attorney basically takes care of everything( for a small fee of course...LOL).It should take around 3 months for the Korean name to permanently become her new American name. I have to admit it feels a bit strange to write that, almost as if we are taking something from her but I guess that's natural. We can then file for a birth certificate that reads "certificate of foreign birth." Then a social security card and an American passport.

Lily these days is quite the climber. I can't turn my head for a second. Here is a pic of how I often find her. Notice the bruise on her forehead. September is a big month for birthdays in our family and we just celebrated Lance's 8th!!

6 Month Visit

Today was Lance's first day of 3rd grade and our final home visit with our social worker. Yes Lily will be home 6 months on the 10th of September. Does anyone know how to make the time slow down just a little bit? In the blink of an eye these babies will be driving cars and off to college! Not that I don't look forward to these wonderous developing relationships I am so blessed to have, it's just that I could use a bit more calm to savor these days that are flying by. I think Lily is like a poster child for Korean adoption sometimes and wonder how we were chosen to be her parents. At 6 months home and 16 months old she is: climbing on everything, chasing her brothers around the house, still doesn't say more than "mom" or "da." She does, however, understand so much and knows how to point to her belly, nose and toes when asked. She loves to put my shoes on ( accessorizing already...yea!) and even tries to draw with crayon! Hide and seek and peek a boo create shrieks of laughter from her tiny body.

After hearing about the first day of school, we headed to pick out flowers for our social worker which Luca proudly gave her along with our family photo. We are grateful to her and the agency for everything they have done for us... truely a life changing experience.

Meeting Cousins

This weekend, we had a great time with Amy and her two boys who were visiting from NJ. It was Lily's first time meeting the boys. They brought us 3 pizzas from NJ!! How we miss the GOOD pizza. Those of you who grew up in NY and NJ and have moved know what I mean. She also brought homemade coookies, scones and pie!!

We only had 2 days but we packed it in... Air and Space Museum, some DC monuments, The White House. Today, it was Burke Lake Park lunch and ice cream after. So great to have them down to hang out with as we close out the summer.

Ok, so her first birthday and baptism were 3 months ago but we have had quite a busy year. I finally got around to having photos done of Lily in her hanbok which was given to her by her foster parents. Boy was she a trooper. So much going on, the dress, the slippers, the headpiece, and all during what should have been her naptime too. Overall she did very well. Can't wait to send a copy to her foster family.
